When painting the exterior of a home the key to success is getting rid of as much of the old paint as possible.  There is history there and it will continue to haunt you as long as the old paint remains. Sure, scraping works but, the gold standard is paint shaving.   Here is why:

• The new product is less likely to fail.
• Switching to stain becomes an option and stain is much easier to maintain than paint.
• It is cheaper than re-shingling.
